The year 2025 marks a special milestone at Sustainable Agriculture Tanzania (SAT) as we celebrate the 10-year journey of Meddy Njusi, whose passion for agroecology has continued to leave lasting impacts on both farmers and colleagues. As Meddy recalls his first experience with SAT during aparticipatory design workshop, he says,
"My passion for agrioecology led me to pursue courses in soil biology and environmental management, which have-to a great extent shaped my belief in alternative, sustainable farming systems, while Field practical training then prepared me for what would become a ten-year commitment to working with farmers and communities."
Over time, his role expanded from supporting projects like Bustani ya Tushikamane and Tree Planting Heroes to leading initiatives, developing courses, and even representing SAT in Tanzania,Ethiopia, Mozambique, and Kenya.
Among his most memorable moments are witnessing the transformation of farmers in Naluale, where initial resistance to irrigation and business training turned into confidence and advocacy as yields grew and costs decreased. Reflecting on this, he says:
“The most rewarding part is when farmers realize the skills imparted are of great value to them, and they begin applying and even advocating for them.”
Training abroad in Grow Biointensive Agriculture also reshaped his approach: “As an agronomist, I realized I needed to unpack my vast knowledge into simple, practical skills that fit the farmer’s context.” This shift has since guided his facilitation and course design at SAT.
Further Reflection on his journey, he credits the collaborative spirit of the organization, where colleagues feel more like family which has been a driving force behind his dedication. For Meddy, sustainability is a practice that integrates productivity, social welfare, and care for the environment. He takes pride in designing on-farm water management systems, guiding land use planning, and mentoring younger staff. Looking ahead, he sees great potential in strengthening services, sharing hard-earned lessons with more farmers and organizations across the region.
As we celebrate this anniversary, we honor Meddy Njusi not only for his decade of service but also for the inspiration he continues to provide, proof that dedication, when rooted in values, can transform both people and communities.
