Imagine a method of cultivation that does not rely on expensive chemicals, but instead works with nature to regenerate soil, boost yields, and safeguard your health. This is the vision behind the Organic Agriculture courses at the Farmer Training Centre (FTC) in Vianzi, Morogoro. Whether you are a new farmer or a seasoned grower seeking to shift towards more sustainable practices, these courses offer practical skills, fresh perspectives, and a strong community of learners. Over the course of the training, participants explore techniques and innovations that bring organic agriculture to life.

“I used to think organic farming was just about avoiding chemicals,” says Agnes Rite, a farmer from Meru, Arusha. “But I realized it’s about building life in the soil.”

This mindset shift is a cornerstone of the FTC course. Participants don’t just learn what to do, but why it works – how organic techniques restore ecological balance, improve productivity, and make farms more resilient.

Hands-On into Organic Practices

In a hands-on approach, participants learn using simple methods like the finger test and bottle test to identify soil types and fertility levels – essential knowledge for tailoring farming strategies to each unique plot.

Another session covers compost-making. Farmers work together to transform common materials like cow dung, dry leaves, green plant matter, and ash into nutrient-rich compost. It’s simple, powerful, and transformative.

“I didn’t know compost could be so powerful,” shares Kija Masalu, a young farmer from Simiyu. “Now I can make a very good fertilizer from simple materials that surround me.”

Turning Problems into Solutions – Naturally

Many farmers struggle with pests, diseases, and weeds, often turning to costly and harmful chemicals. But at the FTC participants learn to manage pests and diseases using safe, natural alternatives. In a practical session, they prepare their own pest repellent using locally available ingredients like neem leaves, soap, and water – an effective and eco-friendly solution.

“This knowledge will help protect our health,” said Ibrahimu Juma Mrisho, a farmer from Morogoro. “Unlike industrial pesticides, these natural methods are affordable and safe. Many farmers don’t know about them yet, which is why trainings like this are so important.”
Edith Mkufya, a participant from Muheza, Tanga, echoed the sentiment. “We suffer from the high cost and health effects of chemical pesticides. But these natural materials are all around us. I believe when I teach other farmers how to make these sprays, they will accept and adopt them easily.”

Farmers also explore how to make liquid organic fertilizers, enabling them to nourish their crops without relying on synthetic inputs.

Trees as Allies, Not Enemies

Another segment of the course introduces agroforestry – a system that integrates trees with crops or livestock to enhance farm productivity and environmental health. Initially, many farmers viewed trees as competition for sunlight and nutrients. But the training reveals how carefully selected species like Gliricidia and Calliandra can improve soil fertility, reduce erosion, offer shade, provide fodder, and act as organic mulch.

“I used to think trees compete with crops,” admitted Magreth Deus, a farmer from Shinyanga. “But now I understand that some trees can actually help crops grow better. I’ll plant Gliricidia and Calliandra on my farm.”

Agroforestry also helps farmers adapt to climate change by making farms more resilient to unpredictable weather patterns and soil degradation.
